PERSONALITY Over the years, Arthur has journeyed from cheerful cynicism to bitter nihilism and back again, landing him somewhere beyond with a comfortable mixture of both. After fifty years of vampirism, and about twenty-five of those years in and out of a deep, self-hating depression brought on by what he's had to become, he eventually resolved to adapt in order to survive. Another downswing may yet come, but he's trying to stay ready for it.

To anyone who might have known him before the change - and that's no one but August, anymore, at least ideally, though he has no way of knowing for certain - he seems quite a lot like his old self: wry, chatty, a little twisty and dramatic with his words, a little rascally. There's a sharp edge to his playfulness, these days, but... well, he is a vampire, and anyone who knows that knows he hasn't exactly sworn off the predatory aspects of his existence.

In spite of it all, Arthur, for the most part, likes to talk and be around people, likes to see and experience and be surprised. There's an optimism to his nihilism now, relieving some of the crushing weight of immortality — a stubborn refusal to give in to the dark meaninglessness of it all and let it consume him the way it's already consumed decades of his life. In fact, stubbornness factors into much of his personality, grown from half a lifetime of apparently doing things wrong no matter where he turned: Catholic guilt, left-handedness, speaking Welsh, not being "smart enough" (read: rich enough) for the "better" school, and to top it off, his sexuality. Anger eventually crystallised into a characteristic defiance that has helped and hurt him in equal measure, getting him to the point of being the functional person he is now, but also getting him into this mess in the first place (if only he'd listened to August and gone home!)

There's still a melancholy to him that he's careful not to indulge too deeply or too often anymore, Romantic and bleak. He has a heart, but the full depths of it only seem to be open to August, no matter how far Arthur may wander from him, tied as they are by their fate.

He avoids getting outright angry, which can add a manic edge to his demeanour in certain situations. Besides hopelessness, it's unsurprisingly the best vector for the demon's influence, and the hardest to control, even now.
